Temple corridors, gardens and maple hillsides are what make Eikando such a good place for autumn photos in kimono.

Eikando is known as one of Kyoto's best autumn leaf temples, and Kiyomizu-dera is one of the most iconic places to wear a kimono. Combined, they make a full day that shows two very different sides of Kyoto in autumn: a quiet Zen temple garden and a hillside temple with sweeping views. The challenge is the order, the transport and the timing.

This guide gives a one-day plan, the best photo spots at Eikando, tips on kimono colours and ways to travel between the two. For the wider autumn picture, see our Kyoto autumn leaves kimono rental guide, our tips on choosing kimono colours, and the Eikando kimono rental guide.

A one-day plan: Kiyomizu-dera in the morning, Eikando in the afternoon

We suggest walking the Kiyomizu-dera area in the morning and heading to Eikando after lunch. In the afternoon the sunlight arrives at an angle, the maple leaves look translucent and the water in the garden catches the light, which suits kimono photography well.

  • Morning: arrive at the shop, choose your kimono and have your hair styled. Allow about an hour.
  • Late morning: walk through Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka to Kiyomizu-dera and spend around two hours visiting and taking photos.
  • Lunch: eat and rest around Kiyomizu-dera or the Ninenzaka area.
  • Afternoon: travel to Eikando and spend two to three hours at the pond, garden, corridors and viewpoints.
  • Late afternoon: leave enough time to get back. Please confirm return time and place with the staff when you book.

Getting from Kiyomizu-dera to Eikando

  • City bus: take a bus from the Kiyomizu-michi stop towards Eikando. The ride takes around 15 minutes and balances time and energy well.
  • Taxi: a direct ride from Kiyomizu-dera saves energy for photos, which is useful for groups and families.
  • Walk along the Philosopher's Path: if you have extra time, this scenic route is lovely in spring and autumn, but it adds a lot of walking, so wear comfortable footwear and go at an easy pace.

Best photo spots at Eikando

The pond (Hojo-ike)

The water reflects the red leaves and your kimono, giving a nearly symmetrical composition. Warm colours such as ochre, vermilion and golden yellow blend into the foliage; deep blue or dark green stand out against the red. The light is especially good in the early to mid afternoon.

The pagoda and stone steps

The pagoda, stone steps and maple trees create layers and depth. Stand on the steps with the pagoda behind you and use the leaves in the foreground as a frame. Elegant, traditional kimono suit the solemn setting.

Corridors and veranda views

Windows, sliding doors and corridors make natural picture frames, with the garden's maples as the backdrop. Sit sideways on a veranda and gaze at the garden for a calm, "enjoying autumn at home" feeling. Relaxed styles such as komon work well here.

Choosing kimono colours for autumn

  • To blend in with the leaves: choose warm tones such as ochre, vermilion and golden yellow for a soft, harmonious look.
  • To stand out: choose deep blue or dark green so you are clearly visible against a sea of red.
  • If you cannot decide: look at the kimono in the shop and ask the staff. Tell them your route and the kind of photos you want.

Kimono rental starts from ¥3,300 (tax included) and the price is the same at both stores. A basic hairstyle, hair ornaments, a bag and tabi socks are part of the experience. See the plans for details.

Crowds, cold and manners

  • Peak autumn colour usually falls in mid to late November, but it varies from year to year. Check current conditions before you go.
  • Peak weekends and holidays are the busiest. Book early and start in the morning.
  • Mornings and evenings in November are cool. Wear warm layers under your kimono and bring something to put over your shoulders.
  • Follow the rules posted at each temple and do not block paths when taking photos.
  • Luggage can be left at the shop, so you only carry a small bag.

Book your autumn kimono day

In autumn, time slots fill first. Choose a date and arrival time, then fine-tune the kimono and hairstyle on the day. Reserve your kimono time online, or read our Kiyomizu-dera kimono rental guide for the morning part of the route.
