Kyoto Kimono Experience Seasonal Selection

Choosing the right season is the first step to a perfect kimono experience.

Spring (March-May)

Climate Characteristics: The temperature is pleasant (10-20°C), but there is a large temperature difference between day and night, and it may still be chilly in March. Cherry blossom season (usually late March to early April) is Kyoto's peak season.
Kimono Selection Suggestions:
Fabric: We recommend choosing fabrics with a certain thickness, such as silk or wool blends, which are both beautiful and warm.
Patterns: Soft colors such as pink, light purple, and light blue complement cherry blossoms perfectly. Classic cherry blossom and wisteria patterns are also excellent choices.
Accessories: A lace kimono top can be added to enhance the look and sweetness.

Summer (June-September)

Climate Characteristics: Hot and humid, especially in July and August, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C. June and July are the rainy season.
Kimono Selection Suggestions: First choice: Yukata (lightweight kimono) – a formal summer alternative to kimono, lightweight and breathable, with vibrant patterns.
If choosing a kimono: Always choose breathable fabrics such as linen, gauze, or ryokan (silk). Avoid heavy silk.
Colors: Cool colors such as blue, green, and white visually lower the temperature.
Kanwa Exclusive Services: All our summer kimonos and yukatas come with a specially made, sweat-wicking, quick-drying apron. We provide small fans, cooling sprays, and other heat-relief items. Transparent umbrellas are provided free of charge on rainy days.

Autumn (October-November)

Climate Characteristics: Clear skies and crisp air make it one of the most comfortable seasons (10-20°C). The autumn foliage season (November) is a super peak season, comparable to cherry blossom season.
Kimono Selection Suggestions:
Fabric and Colors: Opt for high-quality fabrics like silk and satin. Earth tones such as burgundy, ochre, golden yellow, and deep green blend seamlessly with the autumn foliage.
Patterns: Autumn plant patterns such as maple leaves and chrysanthemums are very fitting.

Winter (December-February)

Climate Characteristics: Cold and dry, temperatures can drop to around 0°C, but sunny days are frequent.
Kimono Selection Suggestions:
Fabric: Choose a heavy wool or felt kimono, or wear a thermal undershirt underneath.
Key Styling Pairing – Haori: A thick haori is essential, providing both warmth and style.
Colors: Dark colors such as deep blue, dark green, purple, and black convey warmth and sophistication.

Precautions for wearing kimono

To make your experience more comfortable and elegant throughout the day.

Before wearing: Preparation

Underwear Selection: Please wear a close-fitting, seamless, light-colored tank top and panties. Avoid lace or complex designs to prevent visible lines under your kimono. In winter, please wear low-cut thermal underwear.
Personal Items: Pack light. We offer free storage. Only bring your wallet, phone, makeup, and other essentials; you can use our provided Japanese-style pouches.
Hair and Makeup: We recommend applying makeup first, then styling your hair. If you have booked our professional hair service, please inform your stylist of your preferences in advance.

When wearing: Communicate with the stylist

Breathing Adjustment: Please maintain a normal standing posture and inhale slightly while wearing the shoes. The fitter will ask about your comfort level. The waistband should not be too tight, affecting breathing and eating; comfort and aesthetics are our primary standards.
Expressing Discomfort: If you feel any tightness or discomfort in any area, please let us know immediately, and the fitter will adjust it on the spot. Pay special attention to the shoulders, armpits, and waist/abdomen.

After wearing: All-day activities

Walking: Take small steps, bend your knees slightly, land on the balls of your feet, and keep your upper body straight. When going up or down stairs, lift the front of your kimono slightly for safety and elegance.
Sitting Posture: Whether kneeling (formal sitting) or sitting sideways, the key is to keep your back straight. Gently adjust the back of your kimono with your hand when sitting down. On tatami mats, avoid rubbing your heels together.
Using the Toilet: This is the most common concern. Please lift your kimono layer by layer from the outside in, and finally adjust the kimono. Our kimono master will give a brief demonstration before you leave.

💡 Kimono experience(FAQ)

Answering all your questions about kimono rental

💡Can I choose the pattern of my kimono myself?

Of course! We have hundreds of kimonos for you to choose from. Our professional consultants will also provide expert styling advice based on your skin tone, body type, the season, and the places you plan to visit (such as Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Fushimi Inari Shrine), ensuring you look beautiful and photogenic.

💡Wouldn't it be tiring to wear a kimono all day?

A professionally adjusted kimono should not feel suffocatingly tight. Fatigue comes more from an unfamiliar gait and prolonged standing. We recommend that you plan intermittent rest stops when planning your trip and choose areas with concentrated attractions, such as Gion, to avoid long treks.

💡What if it rains or there is extreme weather?

We offer comprehensive solutions: free transparent umbrellas for light rain; rescheduling for heavy rain; and appropriate warmth and cooling measures for extreme heat and cold.

💡Can children and people with special body types rent kimonos?

Absolutely. We offer children's kimonos in all sizes, from toddlers to teenagers, as well as a variety of adult sizes (including plus sizes).

💡Do I need to make an appointment in advance?

Especially during peak seasons such as cherry blossom season and autumn leaf season, it is strongly recommended to make a reservation in advance to ensure your preferred time slot.
