Gion Matsuri is one of Kyoto's three great festivals, running an entire month (July 1-31). The highlights are the Saki Matsuri Yamaboko Junko on July 17 and the Ato Matsuri Yamaboko Junko on July 24. Wearing yukata or kimono to Gion Matsuri is the most authentic summer Kyoto experience.
This guide covers: core festival schedule, parade routes, best viewing spots, practical yukata/kimono tips, and how to rent the perfect festival yukata from Kanwa.
1. Gion Matsuri 2026 Core Schedule
Saki Matsuri Yoiyama (Eve Festival)
Jul 14-16 Shijo-Karasuma to Kawaramachi becomes pedestrian-only. From 18:00, lanterns light up, yamaboko floats are decorated with komagata lanterns, and yatai food stalls line the streets. No parade, but the entire street IS the festival.
Saki Matsuri Yamaboko Junko (Front Parade)
Jul 17 9:00 start. 23 yamaboko floats depart Shijo-Karasuma, proceeding along Shijo-dori, Kawaramachi-dori, and Oike-dori (~4 hours). Floats reach 25m tall, 12 tons, all human-powered.
Ato Matsuri Yoiyama
Jul 21-23 Smaller scale, far fewer crowds. Perfect for a slower festival experience. Same street closure and yatai stalls.
Ato Matsuri Yamaboko Junko (Rear Parade)
Jul 24 9:30 start. 11 floats depart Karasuma-Oike, traveling in reverse direction. ~40% fewer spectators.
2. Best Viewing Spots
| Location | Best For | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Shijo-Karasuma Intersection | Watching floats turn | "Tsujimawashi" floats pivoted 90 degrees by human power. Most dramatic moment. |
| Kawaramachi-Shijo Intersection | Frontal photos | Floats approach head-on with shopping arcades as backdrop |
| Oike-dori Mid-section | Avoiding crowds | Fewer people, wide visibility, great for telephoto shots |
| Yoiyama Yatai Area | Food & atmosphere | Lanterns + food stalls + yukata crowds |
| Yasaka Shrine | Festival origins | Where Gion Matsuri began. Rituals throughout July 1-31. |
Insider tip: For the front parade, arrive at Shijo-Karasuma before 7:30. Bring a folding stool and sun hat. In yukata, choose low-heeled geta; 4 hours on stone pavements in tall geta is tough.
3. Why Wear Yukata/Kimono to Gion Matsuri?
1. Blend In With Locals
During Gion Matsuri, nearly every local woman wears a yukata. In a yukata, locals will smile and say "yukata ni niaimasu ne" (that yukata suits you) -- a warmth you won't experience in a T-shirt.
2. Double the Photo Quality
Lanterns, yamaboko floats, stone streets, and kimono -- these four elements create the perfect Japanese summer image. The photo success rate in a yukata at Gion Matsuri is exceptionally high.
3. A Sense of Occasion
Gion Matsuri has 1,150 years of history -- one of Japan's oldest festivals. Wearing traditional attire honors that cultural heritage and gives your travel memories more weight.
4. Yukata Styling Tips
| Style | Recommended Pattern | Obi Pairing |
|---|---|---|
| Classic Kyoto | Navy base, white florals | White or pale pink hanhaba obi |
| Playful & Youthful | Pink base, goldfish/cherry blossoms | Matching ribbon-style tie |
| Elegant & Mature | Black base, large purple/red florals | Gold or silver Nagoya obi |
| Men's Yukata | Navy/gray pinstripe | Solid kaku obi, kaikou knot |
Geta: You'll walk a lot. Choose low-heeled geta (3-5cm). If uncomfortable, try "setta" -- flatter and easier to walk in.
Hair: Kanwa offers hair styling (+1,100 JPY). For the festival, a low bun or half-up style -- won't catch on lanterns, looks great in photos.
Belongings: Yukata have no pockets. Bring a furoshiki or small pouch for phone, wallet, and sensu (folding fan). A fan is essential -- photo prop AND cooling.

Book Now6. FAQ
Q: Can I book same-day during Gion Matsuri?
A: Peak days (Jul 14-17, 21-24) -- advance booking strongly recommended. Walk-ins may have space, but yukata selection will be limited.
Q: Won't a yukata be too hot?
A: Yukata are summer-specific, single-layer cotton/linen -- much cooler than regular kimono. With a fan, it's cooler than jeans. Arrive at 16:00 for fitting, just in time for Yoiyama.
Q: Are geta comfortable on stone streets?
A: Shijo-Kawaramachi has flat paved roads -- low geta are fine. If worried, choose "setta" with flatter soles.
Q: Can I ride the train in a yukata?
A: Absolutely. During Gion Matsuri, trains are full of yukata-wearers. Just tie your obi securely.
Q: How does overnight return work?
A: Tell staff you need overnight return. Bring everything back by 17:00 next day -- no extra charge.
