If you only have one day to wear a kimono in Kyoto, make it Gion. Wearing a kimono is not just a costume change — it is a way to step into Kyoto's centuries-old lifestyle. And there is no better backdrop than Gion's lantern-lit teahouses and cobblestone lanes.
Since opening our shop next to Yasaka Shrine, we have been asked the same question almost every day: "Once dressed, how should I explore Gion?" This guide pulls together years of insider knowledge.

Hanamikoji Street — the heart of Gion
Why Gion is Kyoto's Best District for Kimono
Here is something most people do not realize: 70% of a great kimono photo comes down to the background. Many famous landmarks make poor kimono photo locations — Kiyomizu-dera is too crowded, Kinkaku-ji too far. Gion is different.
First, the architecture is your backdrop. The machiya townhouses, noren curtains, and stone-paved lanes create natural frames everywhere.
Second, the scale is right for portraits. Gion's narrow lanes let a person in kimono fill the frame.
Third, the light is unbeatable. The east-west streets create soft side-lighting through building gaps.
Most importantly — our Yasaka shop is a 3-minute walk from Hanamikoji. Get dressed, step outside, turn right — you are there.

Every corner in Gion can surprise you
Kimono + Gion: Best Routes
Half-Day Route (3-4 hours)
Start: Kanwa Kimono Yasaka Shop (10-2 Tsukimicho, Higashiyama Ward). Arrive at 9:00 AM to choose, dress, and style.
Stop 1: Hanamikoji Street (9:45-10:30) — 3-minute walk. Early-morning Hanamikoji is almost empty: just morning light, wooden lattices, and noren curtains.
Stop 2: Shirakawa Canal (10:30-11:00) — Walk north. Stand on Tatsumi Bridge for Gion's most iconic angle: kimono, willows, water, teahouses.
Stop 3: Yasaka Shrine (11:00-11:30) — Vermilion torii gates and white lanterns contrast beautifully with kimono colors.
End: Ishibe-koji Lane (11:30-12:00) — Gion's most underrated spot. Narrow stone path, moss-covered walls, almost tourist-free.
Full-Day Route (6-8 hours)
Stop 4: Chion-in Temple (13:00-14:00) — Massive Sanmon Gate, incredible kimono portrait backdrop.
Stop 5: Shoren-in Temple (14:00-15:00) — Dry landscape garden and bamboo path, wonderfully quiet.
Stop 6: Maruyama Park + Tea (15:00-16:00) — Matcha at a park tea house, the perfect reward.
